  DESIGN TECHNOLOGY CURRICULUM INTENT STATEMENT

INTENT

Design and Technology (D.T.) is an inspiring, rigorous and practical subject. Our curriculum aims to create responsible designers who work ethically whilst showing willingness to take creative risks. It encourages children to learn to think and intervene creatively to solve problems both as individuals and as members of a team.

We encourage children to use their creativity and imagination to design and make products that solve real and relevant problems within a variety of contexts, considering their own and other's needs, wants and values. We aim to, wherever possible, link work to other disciplines such as mathematics, science, engineering, computing and art. The children are also given opportunities to reflect upon and evaluate past and present design technology, its uses and effectiveness in order to become innovators and take part and contribute to our rapidly changing world.

IMPLEMENTATION

Our DT Curriculum at Butterwick C of E Primary School is based on the National Curriculum and linked to our termly topics to ensure a well-structured approach to this creative subject.

The curriculum enables children to develop skills and knowledge which are revisited throughout different units, these are:

  • Mastering practical skills – this involves developing the skills needed to make high quality products in food, materials, textiles, electrical and electronics, construction, mechanics and computing.
  • Design, make, evaluate and improve – this involves developing the process of design thinking and seeing design as a process
